Its a winner-take-all game Wednesday for a spot in the NLCS since the St. Louis Cardinals visit the Atlanta Braves in Game 5 of the NLDS.
In case you followed our recommendation, you are ahead on the MLB gambling this week as we chose St. Louis to beat visiting Atlanta in Game 4 of the NLDS to force this Sport 5. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina — a future Hall of Famer — added to his status.
Together with his team 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Molina muscled one into shallow right field out of second to score Paul Goldschmidt. In the bottom of the 10th, he struck on a one-out sacrifice fly to left field to score Kolten Wong for the victory.
Wednesday is a fantastic night of baseball on this game and in the LA Dodgers in their Game 5. Obviously the 2 winners would meet in the NLCS. Its Atlantas first game since dropping the 2012 Wild-Card Game to these Cards.
It is the Braves first because decreasing the 2004 NLDS into Houston in five in a series. Its the very first St. Louis winner-take all match because beating the Pirates in Game 5 of the 2013 NLDS.
St. Louis has its ace on the mound and arguably the best young pitcher in baseball at Jack Flaherty (11-8, 2.75). He had a good second half of the season, going 7-2 with a microscopic 0.91 ERA in 15 starts as the All-Star split with the opponents batting average of .142 and 124 strikeouts in 99.1 innings.
The 23-year-old took the loss in Atlanta in Game 2 of this show, but it was a excellent start since he allowed three runs and eight hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings.
Atlanta scored a run at the bottom of the first to a Josh Donaldson RBI only — this could be his final match with the Braves when they lose with Donaldson set for free service — and then two at the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homer by Adam Duvall. Flaherty was somewhat worse on the street this season (3.31 ERA) than at home (2.37).
Will supervisor Mike Shildt trust Carlos Martinez if the Cardinals have a direct heading into the bottom of the ninth? Hes pitched 3.1 innings in this show by an ERA of all 16.20 and was hammered from the Braves in the regular season too.
Martinez did get three significant outs in the ninth inning on Monday despite allowing a leadoff double to Ronald Acuna Jr..
All hands will be on deck for the Braves, who are likely thrilled that Tuesday has been an off day because they used six of those eight relievers in Game 4.
Were Max Fried and Mark Melancon. Fried had pitched the first 3 games of the sequence. He had been a high school teammate of Flahertys.
Atlanta needs more offense from Donaldson (2-for-15) along with Freddie Freeman (2-for-16). They have united to go. The Braves have won 79 games in the postseason and regular season in their final at-bat, many in the majors since Brian Snitker took over as interim director on May 17, 2016.
It is Mike Foltynewicz (8-6, 4.54) on the bulge here. He outdueled Flaherty in Game two allowing three hits with seven strikeouts and became the first Braves pitcher to throw seven innings of scoreless ball at a postseason game because Tom Glavine of their 2001 NLDS.
Foltynewicz had a 1.73 ERA over the final seven regular-season begins. Flaherty was the only NL pitcher with a better ERA (0.96) during this interval. Wednesday will mark the fourth postseason start of the livelihood of Folty. The Braves lost his begins in Games 4 and 1 of the NLDS last year.
