West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice says following switching allegiance in the Republic of Ireland into England he received threats over interpersonal websites.
The 20-year-old represented Ireland and also won three mature caps in friendlies – .
“I’ve had people saying they’re going to come to my home,” he told ITV News.
“You click on their profile and they’d only be a bogus profileso you don’t know if it’s true or not.”
Rice is the newest high profile player to reveal they have already been been abused on social media, and England women’s head coach Phil Neville says players should boycott it.
Rice showcased in their 4-0 Euro 2020 qualifier win from Bulgaria and has won four caps for England.
“Thinking about it, I was not really scared about it, because constantly fans are going to be giving me abuse and whatnot over it,” he further added.
“You just kind of look at it and laugh, you think,’Yeahright, as though you’re going to come back and do that sort of item’.”
Rice’s England team-mate Marcus Rashford was mistreated on social websites after having a penalty in Manchester United’s defeat by Crystal Palace in August and also has stated he fears football is”moving backward”.
Social media platform Twitter claims it had”taken actions” on”more than 700 examples of hateful conduct” from the 2 weeks leading up to England’s win against Bulgaria.
Twitter said it had met”directly affected” clubs, the Professional Footballers’ Association and Kick out it in an attempt to”tackle the problem together”.
