Former UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg is in talks with all the world’s top MMA advertising about a new contract, according to her agent Audie Attar, who talked to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on his MMA show. Cyborg has one fight left her contract following her shocking KO loss to Amanda Nunes in UFC 232, however her and her agents have been apparent with the UFC they are interested in a reunion.
In accordance with Attar, Cyborg expects to fight at UFC 237, which takes place this May at Curitiba, Brazil. The principal event of that event will be headlined by UFC women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas carrying on No. 1 competitor Jessica Andrade, also it makes a great deal of sense to pump up the undercard using a fighter of Cyborg’s popularity and name worth, especially in Brazil. If Cyborg does fight at UFC 237, that is going to be the final battle on her contract, even as he has just 1 battle left on it without any winner’s clause because of losing the belt.
The UFC would be smart to bring back Cyborg on a new thing. She’s proven to be a bit of a pay-per-view draw at some time when the UFC needs fighters who market displays, and she won’t be cheap to re-sign, she is shown to be well worth the price. As far as women’s fighters go, there aren’t many more exciting fighters compared to Cyborg and there sure aren’t many with considerably more name worth than she has. The UFC absolutely should re-sign her provided that the request is appropriate.
Although it would be nice to see Cyborg get a rematch with Nunes viewing as though she had been on a 13-year win streak before losing her belt in mad fashion, it’s very unlikely Nunes would take that fight. The rumor is that Nunes wants to fight Holly Holm alongside for the UFC women’s bantamweight championship, which will leave Cyborg without a next logical competitor. There aren’t a lot of featherweights from the UFC at this time, but both which do stand out are Megan Anderson and Cat Zingano. Anderson just beat Zingano in controversial fashion after a toenail sliced her eye and the fight was stopped in the first round at UFC 232, but Anderson did catch her hand raised. If the UFC wanted to do Cyborg from Anderson in Brazil, that is a struggle which makes a lot of sense.
Cyborg will fight that last battle of her contract, however in the case she will enter free service, she will have a lot of suitors. Obviously, Bellator would take a run at her as her ex-Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker is in control of the business. But I would guess RIZIN and ONE would likewise have a run at her, not to mention the WWE, Golden Boy MMA and even some boxing promotions. Cyborg will have plenty of alternatives to choose from. But if her broker has been sincere, she would like to come back to the UFC, and it would be excellent for MMA fans if that’s what occurs.
