Return to the WTA Tour at 2020 and kim Clijsters is to create her tennis comeback.
The former world number one initially retired from 2007 to begin a family, two years after winning her first Grand Slam at the US Open.
She returned 2009 and won the Australian Open and two more US Open titles before her second retirement in 2012.
“I don’t feel like I’d like to establish something. I think for me it is the struggle,” Clijsters said.
Speaking into the WTA Insider Podcast, she added:”The importance of the sport is obviously still there. However, the question is, am I capable of bringing it to a point where I’d like it to be at and where I always want it to be before I would like to play in a high degree of one of the greatest women’s sports in the world?
“I wish to challenge myself and I need to be strong again. That is my marathon”
Clijsters is targeting a return in January, however, says she will stay flexible within her scheduling.
As a former world number one, Clijsters is qualified for wildcards in WTA tournaments. She’ll need to play three tournaments or earn 10 ranking points to re-establish a position.
“Kim Clijsters rankings among the greats of the game along with her return to the Tour is exciting news to the WTA loved ones and tennis enthusiasts around the globe,” explained WTA chairman Steve Simon.
