Eddie Nketiah scored just two goals as England U21s began their Euro 2021 qualifying campaign with a 3-2 victory in Turkey.
Frustration was endured by aidy Boothroyd’s team in the summer it seemed like that feeling could survive on Friday night and as they were knocked from the Championship in the group stages, even though having a crop of prospects.
Just six members of their squad with this month’s qualifiers have played with the Young Lions – Nketiah one of them.
The striker put England , though Turkey turned the game round, Nketiah and Reiss Nelson struck to secure the win.
England started well and went ahead after only four minutes following a fantastic move between Steven Sessegnon and Phil Foden the side of the penalty area; Foden’s low cross was missed by 2 Turkish defenders permitting Nketiah to stab the ball home from seven yards out.
Nelson had a much clearer opportunity to score of the teams went to the level after Dogukan Sinik scored following 25 minutes and raced clear.
England made a slow start to the second half and they paid the price six minutes. A corner saw Mert Muldur get away from his marker and his free rush into the near post watched him flick the ball.
But, two goals in as many minutes turned into the match . Foden had been the architect again, darting goalwards before threading a pass in Leeds just inside the penalty area and on loan to Nketiah, given a finish.
Immediately Nelson netted what proved to be the winning goal with a shot that might have taken a deflection off a guardian that was Turkish.
